BW Global United LPG India Signs Memorandum of Understanding with Indian Maritime University to Provide Scholarships for Female Cadets

BW Global United LPG India (“BW LPG India”, the “Company”) today announced that it has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Indian Maritime University (IMU) Chennai to provide scholarships to deserving female cadets at the IMU.

Since 2021, BW LPG India, India’s largest owner and operator of Very Large Gas Carriers (VLGCs), have provided scholarships to female cadets studying at IMU who have enrolled in the four-year B.Tech (Marine Engineering) or the three-year B.Sc (Nautical Science) degrees. From this year, female cadets enrolled in the one-year Diploma in Nautical Science courses will also be eligible for the scholarship – thereby offering an industry first of sponsorship which also includes full financial support. The scholarships cover all academic fees and guarantees placement at Synergy Ship Management, the Company’s ship manager, to complete their onboard apprenticeship.

Representing IMU and BW LPG India were the Vice Chancellor of IMU Dr. Malini V Shankar I.A.S. (Retd) and Captain Gaurav Bhatia Director respectively. During the signing ceremony, BW LPG India presented selected female cadets with their Letters of Offer, who were pursuing a degree in Marine Engineering.

Says Dr Shankar, “BW LPG India is a Shipping Company with a strong global presence, and it has given a great opportunity to the girl students of IMU and has set an example for the Shipping Industry to emulate. We hope that in future, BW LPG India will partner us in various efforts under research verticals also. We hope our students who have been given offer letters today shall make IMU proud by becoming Brand Ambassadors for IMU in the Shipping Industry.”

Says Captain Bhatia, “This Memorandum of Understanding further strengths our partnership between BW LPG India and the IMU. IMU is an important and leading maritime university in India, and we are committed to a long and meaningful collaboration to advance our shared interests in nurturing future generations of seafarers.”
